Written Reply to Parliamentary Question on Investigations Into an Incident Involving Migrant Workers Holding Placards at a Worksite on 24 October 2024

Published: 11 November 2024

Question:

Ms Hazel Poa: To ask the Minister for Home Affairs whether he can provide an update on investigations into an incident involving several migrant workers holding placards at a worksite on 24 October 2024.

Answer:

Mr K Shanmugam, Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law:

1. The Police are investigating the individuals involved in the incident for offences of organising and taking part in unlawful public assemblies, which is prohibited under the Public Order Act 2009. This includes the employers of the migrant workers, who had allegedly organised the public assemblies.

2. Separately, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) has released a statement on 25 October 2024, confirming that the migrant workers involved were not owed salary payments and had no well-being concerns. MOM is also investigating the employer for illegally deploying the workers and abetting the workers to perform illegal acts under the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act, and will take appropriate actions if necessary.
