Published: 09 September 2024

Question:

Mr Saktiandi Supaat: To ask the Minister for Home Affairs (a) in each year of the past 10 years, how many fatal accidents have been caused by a reversing large vehicle; and (b) whether large vehicles should be mandated to install the safety features that are found on public buses such as blind spot cameras and warning sirens.

Answer:

Mr K Shanmugam, Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law:

1. The Traffic Police does not specifically track data related to whether a fatal accident was caused by a reversing large vehicle.

2. As previously shared in this House, Land Transport Authority requires all heavy goods vehicles and buses to install devices that cover the vehicle's blind spots, as well as the rear view. These devices include blind-spot mirrors and camera systems. Owners of non-compliant vehicles may be subject to penalties, including fines and jail.
