Published: 13 September 2022

Question:

Mr Gan Thiam Poh:
To ask the Minister for Home Affairs whether there are Singaporeans who have been reported to be missing after being attracted to work in Cambodia and Myanmar and who are suspected to be kidnapped to work for the scam syndicate there.

Answer:

Mr K Shanmugam, Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law:

1.   Since 2021, there has been one Police report made, whereby the complainant claimed that he had heard from another party, that there were Singaporean victims possibly being kept against their will in Myanmar to work for scam syndicates there. The complainant stated that he had not personally spoken to the said Singaporeans, and did not have any other information or details regarding the identities of the Singaporeans. The Police has referred this case to its counterpart in Myanmar for assistance.

2.   Police will continue to monitor the situation. Members of the public who suspect that their family members were kept overseas against their will should make a Police report.
