Minister for Home Affairs and Law K Shanmugam’s Visit to the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka from 6 to 8 January 2020

Mr K Shanmugam, Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law, was on an official visit to Colombo, the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, from 6 to 8 January 2020.
On 7 January, Minister Shanmugam called on the President of Sri Lanka, HE Gotabaya Rajapaksa, and also met Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa. During the meetings, Minister Shanmugam and the Sri Lankan leaders reaffirmed the strong bilateral ties between Singapore and Sri Lanka and also discussed several issues of mutual interest, such as countering terrorism and promoting economic development. Minister Shanmugam and the Sri Lankan leaders agreed that both countries could strengthen cooperation in the exchange of knowledge and expertise in the areas of cybersecurity and attracting foreign investments. Minister Shanmugam also shared with the leaders about Singapore’s current legislative measures to maintain racial and religious harmony and deal with online falsehoods, as well as proposed legislation to counter foreign interference in domestic politics.
